Did you know?
Since 2011, Lentil’s first money box has been displayed at the Museum of Democracy, Canberra, because it gives people the freedom to eat as equals.
Freedom and equality is the foundation of Democracy.
On the sign displayed by the money box, you can read:
“The Lentil as Anything restaurants founded by Shanaka Fernando invite diners to anonymously pay what they can afford, or what they feel the food and experience are worth. These restaurants are run as part of a not-for-profit cooperative that provides training opportunities and assistance to marginalised people.
‘The wok and donation box have enabled me to give back to the country that welcomed me from Sri Lanka. They are symbols of tolerance, equality and freedom. These are essential aspects of democracy and Lentil as Anything, where people donate according to their circumstances yet eat the same meal.’
